SaaS SEO consultant

A consultant gives you the audit, the strategy and the roadmap. Your team does the work, which costs roughly half what a done-for-you retainer does. Here is what the role covers, what it costs, and when it is the wrong choice.

Short answer

What is a SaaS SEO consultant?

A SaaS SEO consultant gives a software company the audit, strategy and roadmap to grow organic and AI-search visibility, and supports the in-house team executing it. The consultant decides what to do and in what order. Your team does the work.

US consultants charge roughly $100 to $300 per hour, or $3,000 to $7,000 per month on retainer. That is around half the cost of a done-for-you agency, because you are buying direction rather than execution. Ours runs $3,000 to $6,000 per month.

What a SaaS SEO consultant actually does

The word covers a lot of ground, and some of what gets sold as consulting is a slide deck with keyword volumes in it. Here is the work that justifies the fee.

Technical diagnosis

Comparing what a crawler receives against what a browser renders, checking indexation coverage, reviewing canonical logic across templates, and finding where documentation is cannibalizing commercial pages. On a JavaScript-heavy SaaS site this is usually where the biggest single win sits, and it is the part in-house marketers are least equipped to diagnose alone.

Intent mapping tied to contract value

Building the keyword map from sales-call recordings rather than a volume export, then scoring each term on what one customer from it is worth. On a $24,000 ACV product, ninety searches a month can be worth more than nine thousand. That calculation usually inverts the priority list a team arrives with.

Page strategy and briefs

Deciding which comparison, alternative, integration and use-case pages to build, in what order, with the conversion path defined before anyone writes. A consultant writes the brief; your team writes the page.

AI citation baselining

Establishing where you currently appear across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Grok and Bing for the questions your buyers actually ask, so the program can be judged on movement rather than assertion.

Measurement setup

Getting first-touch and last-touch fields into your CRM, page template tagged on every lead, and logged-in traffic excluded from analytics. Unglamorous, and the difference between proving the channel works and arguing about it.

What a consultant does not do

Write the content, build the pages, run the outreach, or implement the technical fixes. If you need those done for you, you need an agency and the budget that goes with it. A consultant who promises execution at consulting rates is either underscoping or about to disappoint you.

The decision

SaaS SEO consultant versus agency

The honest framing is not which is better. It is whether your gap is direction or hands.

The hybrid most teams end up at

Between roughly $2M and $10M ARR, the strongest arrangement is usually one in-house owner holding product context and priorities, with outside help on the parts that are hardest to hire for: technical diagnosis, digital PR and AI-search measurement. That can start as consulting and expand into execution on the specific workstreams where your team has no capacity.

What SaaS SEO consulting costs

Published market ranges, so you can sanity-check any quote you receive.

  • $100 to $300 per hour is the standard independent consultant range in the US. Below $100 you are usually buying a generalist rather than a SaaS specialist. Above $300 you are paying for a recognizable name, which is sometimes worth it and sometimes just brand.
  • $3,000 to $7,000 per month is the typical retainer for ongoing strategic direction with a standing call and asynchronous review.
  • $4,000 to $8,000 for a one-off technical or content audit as a fixed-scope project, which is the cheapest way to find out how someone actually thinks before committing to anything longer.
  • $3,000 to $6,000 per month is our range, depending on cadence and how much review your team needs.
The paid-audit test

Before committing to any retainer, pay two candidates for a scoped audit. A few thousand dollars to see how someone reasons about your actual site is the cheapest insurance available, and the difference between a strong and weak consultant is obvious in that document.

per month · month to month, no lock-in · scoped to cadence
  • Full technical audit against rendered HTML, with a prioritized fix list your engineers can act on
  • Intent map built from your sales calls, scored on contract value rather than search volume
  • Page briefs for the comparison, alternative and integration pages worth building first
  • AI citation baseline across seven engines, so movement is provable later
  • Attribution setup wired into your CRM in the first ninety days
  • A standing monthly call plus asynchronous review of everything your team ships

If it becomes clear you need execution rather than direction, we will say so and quote the retainer instead. If your team can run it themselves, consulting is the cheaper answer and we will keep you there.

Fit

When consulting is the right call

And when it is not. Roughly half the companies who ask us for consulting need something else.

Hire a consultant if

  • You have a marketer who can execute but no roadmap
  • Your budget is under $8,000 a month
  • Product knowledge is a genuine advantage in your category
  • You want to build the capability in house long term
  • You suspect your current agency is underdelivering and need an independent read

Do not hire a consultant if

  • Nobody internally has time to do the work
  • You need content produced at volume
  • Your bottleneck is earned links, which needs relationships not advice
  • You want someone accountable for the outcome rather than the plan
  • You have no marketing function at all

How to choose a SaaS SEO consultant

Most of the selection advice for agencies applies, but three things matter more when you are hiring one person.

  1. Check they have done the technical work themselves. An agency can hide a weak strategist behind a strong technical team. A solo consultant cannot. Ask them to describe a rendering problem they diagnosed and how.
  2. Ask what they will not do. A good consultant is clear that they are not writing the content or building the links, and will tell you what you need to resource internally.
  3. Check availability honestly. Independent consultants oversell capacity more often than agencies do. Ask how many clients they currently hold and what happens if two need attention in the same week.
  4. Ask for the roadmap format up front. You are buying a document and a cadence. Ask to see a redacted example from another client before you sign.
  5. Agree what happens when your team falls behind. The most common failure mode is the roadmap outpacing the team executing it. Decide in advance whether the consultant flags it, reprioritizes, or picks up the slack at a different rate.
FAQ

Consulting questions

What teams ask before engaging a consultant.

Apply for consulting
What does a SaaS SEO consultant do?
A SaaS SEO consultant gives a software company the audit, strategy and roadmap to grow organic and AI-search visibility, then supports the in-house team executing it. The work covers technical diagnosis for JavaScript-heavy sites, keyword mapping tied to contract value rather than volume, bottom-of-funnel page strategy, and measurement wired to trials and pipeline. The consultant decides what to do; your team does it.
How much does a SaaS SEO consultant cost?
Independent consultants in the US charge roughly $100 to $300 per hour, or $3,000 to $7,000 per month on retainer. Authority Magnet's consulting engagement runs $3,000 to $6,000 per month depending on cadence and scope. A full done-for-you agency retainer starts around $5,000 and typically runs $10,000 to $15,000, because you are paying for execution as well as direction.
Should I hire a SaaS SEO consultant or an agency?
It depends on whether you have hands or direction. If you have a capable marketer and no roadmap, hire a consultant and keep execution in house. It costs roughly half as much and your team keeps the product knowledge. If you have budget but no bandwidth, hire an agency. If you have neither people nor budget, fix that before hiring anyone.
Is a SaaS SEO consultant worth it for an early-stage startup?
Often more so than an agency. Below roughly $5,000 a month an agency retainer buys publishing volume rather than a program, whereas the same money spent on a consultant buys senior thinking that your existing team executes. The constraint is that you need at least one person who can actually do the work.
What should I expect in the first month?
A technical audit against rendered HTML, an intent map built from your sales calls rather than a keyword tool, an AI citation baseline across the engines your buyers use, and a prioritized roadmap with owners and effort estimates. If month one is all discovery with nothing your team can act on, you are paying for a slow start.
Can a consultant work alongside our existing agency?
Yes, and it is a reasonable arrangement when you suspect the agency is underdelivering but cannot tell. A consultant can audit the work independently, tell you whether the strategy is sound, and give you the questions to ask. We do this occasionally and we will tell you honestly if the incumbent is doing good work.
How many hours a month does a consulting engagement involve?
Typically eight to twenty hours depending on scope: a standing strategy call, asynchronous review of work your team ships, roadmap updates, and ad hoc technical guidance. The value is in the judgment rather than the hours, which is why hourly billing suits one-off audits better than ongoing direction.
What is the difference between a SaaS SEO consultant and a fractional CMO?
A consultant covers search specifically: technical, content strategy, authority and AI visibility. A fractional CMO covers the whole marketing function including paid, brand, lifecycle and team hiring. If organic search is your bottleneck, a consultant is cheaper and deeper. If you have no marketing leadership at all, the fractional CMO is the right call.
